Rain often arrives without much warning. Sometimes it happens in the middle of a warm-up, sometimes on a long hack when the sky suddenly turns grey.

There is a particular sound made by a hoof in the summer — that crisp and confident "tap" that occurs when the hoof strikes dry ground. In contrast, there is the softer and almost hesitant "thud" of the hoof sinking into mud in the winter.

Long-distance travel is challenging for both the horse and the owner. A number of things need to happen before a horse will successfully complete a long distance.

As a matter of fact, when you spend a lot of time near a barn, you will begin to see a very subtle shift in how things happen. A horse approaches with a relaxed demeanor, its jaw unforced, and the reins move with the smoothness of silk under the rider's fingers.

That "moment" happens to all of us. You're standing in the tack room, surrounded by all sorts of rugs, and you suddenly find yourself wondering: "Okay...which one does my horse really need today?"
